Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of hand moxibustion therapy on constipation among female university students.

Method: This study was conducted with nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Data collection and the intervention were done from June 5 through July 24, 2008. The subjects consisted of 33 female students with constipation in K university. Fifteen were assigned to experimental group and eighteen to control group. hand moxibustion therapy was given to experimental group once a day for two weeks. Constipation Assessment Scale(CAS) developed by McMillan and Williams(1989) with 8 items was used. Data were analyzed with -test, independent t-test using SPSS/Win 14.0 program.

Result: The findings were as follows: Hypothesis was supported that the scores of CAS in experimental group were significantly lower than those in control group(Z=-2.36, p=.018).

Conclusion: Based on the study results, hand moxibustion therapy would be effective in constipation relief for female university students in their 20s.
